After retiring in 2016, I was asked by the NED board to explore the possibility of Newcastle becoming a Restorative City (I live at Lake Macquarie). I had done similar successful work in the ACT.
After a few false starts I was introduced to staff in the Law Faculty of the University. An enthusiastic steering committee, headed by Tania Sourdin, the Dean, and an advisory group of people from the Newcastle community, was formed and we started work in earnest.
The NED board, through its strong commitment to Restorative Practice, financially supported the initiative and is now the Platinum Sponsor for a symposium to be held in Newcastle in June.
It will be a much longer journey to create a Restorative City. However, judging by the level of commitment, the momentum is there. Our job is to enable this enthusiasm to be supported and nurtured to make the vision a reality.
